Chanel’s highly anticipated autumn/winter 2014 ready-to-wear show took amazed crowds on a trip to the supermarket at Paris Fashion Week on Tuesday (March 4).
The French capital’s Grand Palais was transformed into the ‘Chanel Shopping Center’, stocked with thousands of luxurious food items, including Tweed cola and Chanel pots of paint.
Informality was brought to high-end fashion as models browsed the makeshift store in orange, green and baby pink sparkling sneakers, some of which developed into knee-length boots.
Tweed turned the models hair into dreadlocks, and was also used in patterned suit-dresses layered over purple sparkling tops and jeans.
Clothes were accessorised with oversized bug sunglasses, bulky pearl necklaces, handbags encased in shopping baskets and fishnet black gloves.
A bright yellow coat with a 70s-inspired multicoloured lining was worn over black leather trousers, orange sneakers and paired with black chunky headphones and a metal chain complete with a Chanel padlock.
Model Cara Delevingne, who opened the show, accompanied designer Karl Lagerfeld as he took his bow at the end.
The models brought an element of normality to the catwalk as they browsed the Chanel store in their luxurious outfits, which Lagerfeld told Reuters Television had been the intention of the show.
“I wanted to show the ease of the clothes, the way they walk in those shoes, the modern approach even to luxury, that luxury should not be something like this, confined to a limited thing. If you are lucky enough that you can buy those things, buy them but don’t wear them to show people how rich you are,” he said.
Lagerfeld admitted, however, that he himself was not one to regularly shop in supermarkets.
“I don’t shop a lot, i’m working a lot so other people shop for me but I have nothing against it, I think it’s fun. I don’t eat a lot of stuff so I don’t want to be tempted, there is a real temptation because there are so many unnecessary things you would like to eat or to taste, I think that’s part of our pop culture of daily life,” he said.
Film star Kiera Knightley told Reuters Television the show had been amazing, with Lagerfeld once again delighting Chanel fans with his spectacle.
